Cindy Sherman

Cindy Sherman was born in New Jersey and move to New York City after college. She got a B.A. in photography at the State University in Buffalo, New York. Her most famous piece of work was her Untitled Film Stills. It contained 69 eight by ten glossies in black and white. Her photographs were about solitary heroines. They represented the roles of imaginary blonde actresses. She modeled for her photographs. She started in 1977 and stopped in 1980 when she said that she ran out of cliches. Her series demonstrates the stereotyping of women in the media. She took most of the photos in her own apartment, but some were taken on Long Island beach, outdoors in New York City, and Arizona. She also used a lot of her own props. People find her photographs intriguing because they know they can't be real.
